College Football Predictions with Spreads

We're off to the races.

The first week of college football has come and gone, and we've already had some very entertaining games thus far.

We had a player punch another player in a game, we had a big Top #25 upset, we had two storied universities playing like the day of old, and we had one of college football's greatest rivarlies stage yet another great finish at the end of the game.

Of course in order I am talking about the Oregon vs. Boise State game, BYU vs. Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Michigan, and Miami vs. Florida State.

Now that we have all of the cob webs out of the way, let's go into some more college football action.

Last week I should have gone to Vegas and possibly buy my state's lottery ticket as I started off the season at 5-0 (for last week's results of my college football picks click here).

I am not daring a repeat of last week's performance, because in the language of statistics that's what's called an outlier.

In this business you're lucky if you have 51% winners much less 100%. I know they are some handicappers out there that are in the 60's and that's just phenomenal (my Jim Rome impression).

But I am just a fan, I don't do a ton of research I just pick games and winners that make sense to me.

And here we go...

College Football Picks with Spreads

South Carolina (+7) at Georgia

I say take South Carolina and the points. Georgia didn’t impress me much on the road last week at Oklahoma State, but neither did South Carolina on the road versus N.C. State for that matter, but it was a good victory for the SEC on the road at an ACC team’s home.

These games have historically been close over the years. Both teams struggled on offense last week, so I think it will be another ugly game, but a close one at that.

Take South Carolina (+7)

USC at OhioState (+7)

Tough game to call, I am only doing it because it is such a BIG match-up. Last season USC disposed of OhioState 35-3, but USC had an NFL-type of defense last year. But they lost a lot of players on defense (even though I am told that USC doesn’t rebuild, they reload) and they lost Mark Sanchez to the NFL as a first round pick.

They are starting a true freshman in Matt Barkley at Quarterback, first one USC has had in like 20 years. He seems like a very confident QB and kinda cocky.

When asked what was the most difficult part of the game last week versus San Jose State he had said, ‘walking through the tunnel’. Hmmm.. that kind of confidence can be a good thing or a bad thing.

I think playing at the horseshoe, OhioState keeps game close may even win it. They are probably a little fumed at last year’s embarrassing loss and keep it at least competitive. Terrell Pryor seems like a very gifted athlete / Quarterback. This game might bring him into some early Heisman talks.

I like OSU and the 7 points.

Take Ohio State (+7)

Notre Dame (-3) at Michigan

Both teams were impressive during their first game, which is much improved after what's gone on the last few season openers for both squads. I really do think Notre Dame has found their offensive mojo and they might just take one at the big house. Michigan played pretty well in their opener and it's hard to say they would lose to Notre Dame at home.

But I really do believe that Hawaii game at the end of last year was a turning point and is going to catapult Notre Dame into some respectibility (especially given their easy schedule).

Take Notre Dame (-3)

Hey, TBB! Thanks for the tips! I really like your picks as you make excellent vailid points, especially about USC. There is no way those guys are going undefeated this year. They have too many holes (they lost their offensive and defensive coordinators, their top receiver has a broken collar bone, and they have to rely on a True Freshman QB?) I definitely don't smell 12-0! Thanks, man.

Thanks Dohn!

Very good points on the loss of the coordinators as well.

With USC being in the Pac-10, anything is possible. I think they could run the table in that conference as I really don't see anyone else really that good.

USC has a great trio of running backs but they may be too green at the Quarterback position to win on the road.

We'll see what this kid is made of in his first true test in a hostile environment.

Dude I think OSU will get absolutely waxed, I know USC has some holes, but they have a ton of talent, and more importantly they have speed which OSU does not have. Pete Carroll is so good in big games as well....guess we will see

Yeah it was a good win for USC. I just thought with a true freshman trying to win on the road, it wasn't going to be a cakewalk. After watching the game, I am not TOO impressed with USC or Ohio State. USC has a good running attack, and solid d, but they can be beat.

tough losses on ND and Oh St. those should have been easy wins.

yeah Notre Dame probably should have won; I thought they would steal one in Big House

USC vs. Ohio State, i knew it was going to be close but i wasn't sure who was going to win. Good game, though
